Mount Hood and Timberline Lodge

On Monday we drove out to Mount Hood to check out Timberline Lodge and the crazy amount of snow they've been getting there. The resorts only opened a couple weeks ago, and Mount Hood has already gotten double what it normally does. If you've seen The Shining, you'll recognize Timberline Lodge as the lodge in the movie. It's only the exterior though- apparently the inside was a set. Still cool to see though, espeically buried under so much snow.

In this shot you can see the tunnel that is used as the entrance for the winter. Normally it's just open steps leading to the front door, but because of the amount of snowfall, they have to use this tunnel in the winter. There's more info and summertime shots here. It was hard to take photos of the lodge because the snow was blowing into my eyes and i could hardly see anything for more than a second.

You can see some skiers and snowboarders off in the distance.

Inside the middle area of the lodge where there are dining and living room areas.

Most of the windows we passed on the first and even second floors were snowed in.

Lots of cool old beamwork. Timberline is made of mostly wood and stone and has lots of old detailing.

These last two are on the drive home, which was much clearer than on the way up. We couldn't see 30 feet ahead at some points, and weren't able to see any trees other than those immediately lining the road. The tree limbs were piled up with snow and some of the exposed tree trunks had a couple inches stuck to them.
